People attracted to Boston Terriers often purchase a dog on impulse. They fail to educate themselves on the breed and its needs and have to face problems in the future. Their inability to confront the breed's needs with the conditions they can provide makes them abandon the dog after a few months in their house. Such irresponsible owners contribute greatly to the number of abandoned dogs that end up in rescues.
Rescues officers also state that abandoned Boston Terriers can originate from irresponsible breedings. Irresponsible breedings include unplanned or poorly planned litters and a lack of appropriate care for the puppies and the dam. Breeders are supposed to screen the breeding stock for hereditary diseases to which the breed is prone and match temperament traits of the sire and the dam prior to breeding.
It is acknowledged that education is a must for anyone involved in breeding the dogs and for those who are eager to acquire a Boston Terrier. This will help to reduce the number of abandoned and abused dogs. Besides, it will be instrumental for further improvement of the breed.
Boston Terrier clubs and rescues do their best to educate the public on the breed. Club and rescue officers inform breed fanciers on the Boston Terrier characteristics, living and care requirements, health issues, and other aspects of living with the dog. There is no gainsaying; this is an effective policy and an important step taken by those who care for the welfare of Boston Terriers.
